A Bit of History
The history of this popular style is as interesting as the hoppy brew itself
In the early 1700s trying to get beer south across the equator, around the Cape of Good Hope and then back north across the Indian Ocean to the British soldiers and citizens based there, and demanding beer, in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras was a major challenge!
If you have ever been unfortunate enough to have had a skunk beer, then you know what the British were dealing with! Extreme temperature changes, and long, hot storage conditions cause beer to go bad – really bad. India Pale Ale, or IPA was the solution. The generous amount of hops in this brew and the increase in the alcohol content protected it from the heat.
IPA could have faded into history with the arrival of refrigeration, modern storage and local breweries. However, a fateful shipwreck firmly established IPA as its own style when a ship leaving London was wrecked and the casks recovered from the wreck were sold in England and the unusually hoppy ale was a big hit.
